Cloud Services: Which One is Best for You?

Author:

Whether the destination is a private, public, or hybrid cloud, it is clear that companies are continuing to migrate their workloads and applications to the cloud. If your company is going to be one of those companies, you must determine first which cloud service is best for the business. As mentioned in the previous article (drive a better business value with cloud services), there are three types of cloud services available, namely infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), and software as a service (SaaS).

According to Gartner’s research, the worldwide public cloud services market is projected to grow 16% in 2018 to total $287.8 billion, up from $246.8 billion in 2017. The highest growth will come from cloud system infrastructure services (IaaS) which is projected to grow 31%, followed by PaaS with 20% growth and cloud application services (SaaS) with 19%.

Let’s gain more understanding about these cloud services!

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)

IaaS typically includes networking, computers, and data storage space. It provides the hardware to get the job done. When you obtain IaaS, you’re paying for the parts and pieces to construct what you want. IaaS providers also supply computing infrastructure such as virtual server space, bandwidth, network connections, IP addresses, and load balancers. With this service model, your enterprise is responsible for managing applications, data, operating systems, middleware, and runtime.

Platform as a Service (PaaS)

Using PaaS provides business free from hardware procurement, updating software, and capacity planning. If this sounds similar to IaaS, then remember that IaaS is about hosting but PaaS is about building, which is why it’s aimed at developers. You can avoid concerns about maintaining software or downloading patches to fix operating bugs. You also do not have to worry about planning for storage capacity issues. If you are a software or web developer, PaaS could be the best option that offers benefits to your business.

Software as a service (SaaS)

This type of cloud service removes concerns regarding infrastructure, the platform, and updates/upgrades to the service. As the customer, you are left to focus on how you’ll use the application to achieve your desired outcome. This is because SaaS applications are not purchased and installed, they are downloaded onto your system for you to use. If you are a small business, you can save money on this cloud service. This is because you can find a plan that allows you to only pay for what you use, meaning you’re avoiding the costs of unnecessary applications and other software you might not need for your business.

Companies have realized multiple benefits that result from the use of cloud computing systems.
