What You Need to Know About Network Security

Author:

There is no denying that technological advancement has made it possible for the evolvement of the Internet and networked computers. By having networked devices, data sharing between participants in the organization would be easier. However, when attacks happen, all devices that are connected to one’s network will be impacted. Therefore, ensuring the security of one’s network should be a top priority for all enterprises.

Network security is any activity designed to protect the usability and integrity of your network and data that involves both hardware and software technologies. It combines multiple layers of defense at the edge of and in the network. Each network security layer implements policies and controls to make sure that only authorized users can gain access to network resources, not malicious actors who would want to exploit and cause harm to one’s network.

There are many ways for malicious entities to attack your network. McAfee Labs Threat published a December 2017 report that revealed the top network attacks during the third quarter of 2017. Server Message Block (SMB) attacks (44%) attained the top position, followed by browser (web) attacks (16%), and denial-of-service (DoS) attacks (13%). On the first and second quarter, the most common network attacks were worm attacks (24%), along with browser (web) attacks (20%) and brute force attacks (20%).

Along with different kinds of network attacks, come a dozen types of network protection, including antivirus and antimalware to prevent and remove malwares, application security to protect applications and wireless security for wireless network. Other types are firewalls to protect your trusted internal network against untrusted outside networks, web security to prevent web-based attacks and also security information and event management (SIEM) to identify and respond to threats.

With network attacks continuing to evolve, implementing only one type of network security is no longer adequate. As an expert in IT infrastructure and security, CTI Group can assist you in assessing your network’s vulnerabilities to help you implement the right network security within your organization.
