Tapping into the Metaverse: Keynote Highlights from CTI IT Infrastructure Summit 2023

Author:

For a brief period early this year, the Metaverse was a frequent topic of discussion on the CTI Group blog. CTI IT Infrastructure Summit 2023, held on March 16 of that year, had as its theme “The Metaverse: Why Your Business Needs to Prepare by Now?”, which inspired the selection of this topic.

It is common knowledge that the concept of the “metaverse,” a technological platform that allows users to interact on virtual environments, has been prevalent since the year 2020. Many believe the metaverse will grow into a massive phenomenon that will change how people use the internet in the near and far future.

But can we count on such predictability in the metaverse? Is it true that this technology can grow quickly as capture the focus of businesses and investors across sectors? This article will go deeper into this potential, as stated by the keynote presenters at the 2023 CTI IT Infrastructure Conference, featuring Avium co-founder Nathanael Lim, Director of Channel Alibaba Cloud Dr. Anthon Hutabarat, and Country Director of Palo Alto Network Adi Rusli.

Been Around Since 90s

In his keynote address, Avium co-founder Nathanael Lim stated that the metaverse is not a novel technological concept. He disclosed that the name “metaverse” has been around since 1992, when Neal Stephenson published his science fiction novel Snow Crash, long before Facebook rebranded its company as Meta in 2021.

To provide a more immersive gaming experience for its community, Avium is a company that focuses on developing Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT). The primary objective is to use the Web3 platform to create the largest studio network in Southeast Asia.

It is within this potential that Nathanael sees Web 3.0 (or Web3) as one of the defining features of metaverse technology. What therefore, differentiates Web 3.0 from the metaverse?

“Web3 is not the same thing as the metaverse. If we go back far enough, we can see that the web has seen several incarnations of ideas, each with growing capacities. Web2 is already read-write interactively, and Web3 may be read-write trusted and verified. Web1 is limited to static reading only. Web3’s role as a metaverse-enabling technology becomes clear in this context,” as Nathanael put it.

Regarding the implementation of the metaverse, Nathanael stressed numerous considerations for companies interested in making use of it. He began by elaborating on how organizations can more accurately prepare for the costs associated with using this technology by first identifying the people who would be using it.

“The second factor is experience. If companies want to raise revenues, they need to reevaluate whether the metaverse can actually improve the user experience,” he continued.

He also added that accessibility, hardware requirements, interfaces, and most crucially legal laws are only a few of the factors that enterprises must consider when deciding whether or not to use the metaverse.

Metaverse’s Huge Potential to Society

Metaverse

At the same time, Director of Channel for Alibaba Cloud Dr. Anthon Hutabarat, , underlined the timely and practical nature of the metaverse for its customers. This was especially true in Indonesia. Metaverse technology, in his view, has the potential to better satisfy individuals’ need to belong to societies.

Anthon remarked, “The Metaverse is not simply about games or virtual reality; rather, this technology may build new experiences, which can meet people’s needs.”

Anthon has stated that the metaverse would use BIGANT technology (which stands for Blockchain, Interactive, Gaming, AI, Network and Computation, and Things) to facilitate its function (Internet of Things).

The potential of the metaverse is not only in Indonesia, but globally, to “virtualize” a wide variety of situations and requirements, including but not limited to modes of transportation, shopping, entertainment (movies and books), and more. As a result of this prospect, businesses will incur no additional expenses.

Calculating the Security Risks of Metaverse

Palo Alto Networks Country Director Adi Rusli, brings up the topic of cyber security in the context of the metaverse. Since the pandemic, the emergence of hybrid working has posed a substantial threat. This is because there is a rise in the number of distant devices and users, as well as in the complexity of cloud deployments.

“This digital endeavor that has begun running has offered up a bigger attack surface,” he added.

Adi claims that the platforms, including the 5G network and several other computer components, will be connected together if the metaverse is included. As this might compromise the security of users’ personal information in the metaverse, it creates a risk.

Adi adds, “identification is also going to be one of the problems that will need fixing in the metaverse.” He warned that people may eavesdrop on others in the metaverse by stealing the identity of their avatar. Moreover, this avatar can be utilized to create false identities and even deep fakes.

Adi stresses the importance of a unified approach to addressing security threats and attack vectors in the metaverse, or cyberspace.

According to him, “it is advised that enterprises who adopt the metaverse return to traditional things, where adopting the principle of zero trust to eradicate any form of implicit confidence in the metaverse.”

And the security of the metaverse platform itself is a major issue. Because collaboration and open lines of communication are so vital, this is necessary. Enhancing the safety of networks and the cloud is one approach.

When it comes to the SOC (Security Operations Center), companies need to beef up their security by using rate intelligence. He summed up by saying, “Businesses can engage with Managed Service partners to optimize this strategy if at all practicable.”
