Since last year, when social media behemoth Facebook rebranded itself as Meta, the metaverse has been garnering a huge amount of attention. As was highlighted in the previous article, the concept of metaverse depicts a digital environment where users may engage in real-time interaction with digital objects with the help of cutting-edge technologies like Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR).
The commercial sector is expected to be profoundly impacted by the metaverse, even if it is still in its infancy. According to McKinsey, more than US$120 billion will have been invested in the metaverse by the end of 2022, so this forecast is more than just wishful thinking. The percentage of people actively participating in the metaverse has also grown, reaching as much as 79 percent where 25 percent of top-level executives said they expect the metaverse will contribute 15 percent or more to their company’s revenue during the next five years.
Based on these projections, it’s easy to see how many organizations are already shaping the metaverse toward its next stage of development. Metaverse technology is still in its early stages of development, according to Gartner. As a result, it is undeniable that the next several years present an ideal window of opportunity for businesses to experiment with the metaverse by adopting a broad range of trends. What, therefore, are the trends that Gartner has identified? To learn more, check out the following article.
6 Metaverse Trends to Look Out For
As Gartner points out, there are real-world uses and economic advantages that can be derived from the metaverse technological developments that they identify. It is expected that this trend would keep expanding during the next three to five years. Many of them are listed below.
1. Gaming
Since a few years ago, the gaming industry has been at the forefront of developing new kinds of virtual entertainment. Sometime in the future, the gaming industry will make use of metaverse advancements, processes, and tools to build more engaging and realistic video game experiences.
In fact, the metaverse will be used by gaming companies to help them make games with more authentic narratives. There will be a 25 percent increase in the game industry by 2025 as a result of the widespread use of the metaverse, according to Gartner.
2. Digital Humans
Digital humans are an interactive idea that portrays AI with some “human-like” knowledge and attitude. This concept, also known as “digital twins”, allows real-world metaverse users to generate avatar-like clones of themselves in the virtual world. Digital humans are unique in that they can mimic how the actual user communicates, gestures, and presents.
Several sectors want to use the concept of digital humans to serve as metaverse “digital agents” for services such as customer service, support, sales, and other consumer interactions. According to Gartner, by 2027, the majority of B2C CMOs will have a specific budget to develop digital humans in a more sophisticated metaverse.
3. Virtual Space
A virtual space is an interactive environment where people and their digital copies can coexist. People may “blend in” with digital environments and objects in virtual reality. As a result, this concept may be employed to draw in more customers who would not otherwise have access to these types of business services.
The concept is expected to spread to sectors like retail and tourism, where it will provide customers with virtual services they can enjoy from afar. Companies with a large number of employees are likely to embrace this idea since it facilitates remote work in a virtual environment.
Gartner estimates that by 2025, 10 percent of all workers will make frequent use of virtual workplaces. If we compare this figure to that of 2022, we see an increase of 1 percent.
4. Shared Experience
A shared experience is an “advanced” concept of virtual space, wherein in the future virtual space would incorporate multiple features and apps to be used by users in one scope to meet, communicate, collaborate, participate, or share experiences, be it at a service or event.
By 2028, Gartner predicts that 10 percent of public events like concerts and sporting events will adopt the shared experience model from the metaverse.
5. Tokenized Assets
When assets are tokenized, it opens up a new revenue stream for creators. Tokenized assets in the metaverse will use NFT to power a new economic model. To give just one example, this approach will be utilized by content creators to monetize their work. Eventually, the metaverse’s innovative capabilities will give rise to innovative channels through which customers may acquire both virtual and actual services and goods.
Gartner predicts that by 2027, one-quarter of retailers offering e-commerce will completely implement this strategy.
6. Spatial Computing
Through the use of both digital and physical objects, spatial computing improves our experience of the world around us. By presenting “invisible” digital information and material related to people, places, and objects, this concept enables enterprises providing exhibition services, like museums, to augment the immersiveness of their physical and digital assets. Digital content like this may be used by businesses to add new dimensions to exhibits that already feature tangible things, such as digitally coloring in historical details on sculptures of ancient Greeks and Romans.
By 2026, according to Gartner’s forecast, businesses will reap the benefits of spatial computing when they provide “smart glasses” to customers so they can view metaverse products in Augmented Reality (AR).
